Understanding Binaural Beats and its Effects

Ask anyone if they've listened to— or even heard about— binaural beats and more often than not, the majority of them might just look at you with a blank face, and after a few moments of silence, they'll say, "What's that?"

What exactly are Binaural Beats?

It is a wholly different auditory experience using frequencies. These are not harmful, and are actually very beneficial for the mind, body and esoteric state of our being. There has been a lot of debate about the effects of binaural beats, but in this article, I will give you a little nudge towards the directions about what these beats mean for us all.

Binaural beats are made from two different tones or frequencies situated on each ear. For example, 100Hz is played on the right ear, and 105Hz is played on the left ear, the binaural beat frequency result is 5Hz, which is interestingly associated with the effects of relaxation. Our brain follows those two separate frequencies and creates the third, which is known as the binaural beat.

For a little bit of history, In 1839, Heinrich Wilhelm Dove had discovered that binaural beats gives different types of effects— which coincidentally was already known and claimed by the alternative medicine community— but Dove made the public aware that such beats could induce relaxation, meditation, creativity and many more mental, emotional, and physical states.

In recent times, the Monroe Institute, which is a non-profit research and educational organization that has dedicated itself to enhancing and understanding the human consciousness, have continued to this day the study of brainwaves and the effects of what binaural beats can provide to humanity, among other things.

Binaural Beats are also categorized as Brainwave Entrainment, and these types of auditory experiences are best listened to with headphones. Stereo speakers can work as well, but are not nearly as effective. It is not advisable to listen to these binaural beats while driving, lifting heavy equipment, or doing strenuous  activity, for the beats will mainly cause relaxation. The ideal setting to listen to these are in a quiet room, sitting down or lying on your bed. Sometimes, as a person listens to binaural beats that are intended as a Study Aid, these particular formulas of binaurals can be listened to as a background ambient sound.

Other recommendations to achieve the best results from binaural beats are by using meditation, or focusing on one clear objective which can either be self-healing purposes or aiming for your goals. Have I raised your eyebrow yet? Yes. That is how powerful sound, vibration and frequency can be. Our mind contains natural brainwaves that also help the body and behavioral characteristics for each person.

There are 4 major known categories of brainwaves that binaural beats are also based on, and these are Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. Each categorized brainwave has their own web of related effects to our consciousness.

These naturally occurring brainwave frequencies can sometimes become unbalanced during the course of our day, and the most common culprit for an unbalanced mind is stress. Now, using binaural beats as a stress reliever is also one of the most common search keywords people look for on the internet. Sleep Aids are another.

The vast majority of the useful effects that binaural beats can give us results in more than 100 different types, and these are also categorized as:

  • Healing frequencies
  • Learning frequencies
  • Natural Phenomena Frequencies.

How did that make you feel?

Binaural Beats are based on sound frequencies. Frequencies lead to certain vibrations. Vibrations become Energy. Sound is a vibration, thus Sound IS Energy. To quote a section about The Law of Vibration from One Mind, One Energy:
The Universal Law states that everything in the Universe moves and vibrates - everything is vibrating at one speed or another. Nothing rests. Everything you see around you is vibrating at one frequency or another and so are you. However your frequency is different from other things in the universe - hence it seems like you are separated from what you see around you - people, animals, plants, trees and so on. BUT you are not separated - you are in fact living in an ocean of energy - we all are.
It is sometimes hard to comprehend the merging informations gathered from various points of study about sound, but as science draws closer and closer to unfolding the mysteries still left hidden about the powers of frequencies and vibrations, we tend to sit back and acknowledge what has been revealed. The simple notion that your favorite song can instantly alter your state of mind and make you feel good simply shows what the power of sound can do.
