What Is Dream Yoga, And What Does It Do?

Yoga is a form of physical, mental, and spiritual practice that trains the body, clears the mind, and stokes the spirit. To many, the word yoga is synonymous with stretching, poses, and sometimes, a lot of sweat and effort. But did you know that there is one form of yoga that is totally different from what we normally know? This is dream yoga.

Dream Yoga: A Tibetan Technique

Many people often associate lucid dreaming with dream yoga, sometimes even citing that they are one and the same. While lucid dreaming can be a very powerful and entertaining tool, lucid dreaming will not help a dreamer achieve enlightenment, something that dream yoga seeks to do. While lucid dreams can create negative karma, dream yoga is designed to purify it. Dream yoga is designed to unite you with deeper aspects of your being and is more concerned with self-transcendence.

Tibetan Buddhists developed dream yoga because they believe that every night, instead of falling asleep, one must take the opportunity to “practice waking up.” They believe that the waking life is simply “sleepwalking”, and from someone who is truly awake, the regular person’s mind is still asleep.

Put it simply, dream yoga is a set of meditations that transforms the way we relate to sleep and dream. It starts where lucid dream leaves off. Just like lucid dreaming, the dreamer wakes up inside a dream, but that is where the similarity ends. Instead of doing what they want, the dreamer instead trains the mind, stretching their waking consciousness into the dream state. What this teaches the dreamer is how to “wake up from the dream or nightmare of daily life.”

The whole process aims to follow this path: learning how to remember dreams, learning how to wake up in dreams (lucid dreaming), training the mind in the dream, and finally, learning how to stay awake in a dreamless sleep. All the while taking what you learn from the experience and bringing those lessons to the day, to transform your life through night meditation.

The goal is to wake up, spiritually.

Interestingly, it is also a good way to prepare for death, according to the experts. The experience of waking up in a dreamless sleep is stated to be similar to the experience of death or dying. By bringing the darkness of ignorance (sleep) into the light of consciousness with dream and sleep yoga, practitioners not only illuminate and eventually eliminate sleep and dream, but also the concept and fear of death.

How To Perform Dream Yoga

The steps to perform dream yoga are very similar to engaging in lucid dreaming. You can find our guides to lucid dreaming in the links below, to start your entry to a controlled dream.

The key difference starts after the dreamer achieves lucidity. And it is very important to remember these guidelines to engage in dream yoga.

1.)    Resist the power – once the dreamer achieves lucidity and recognizes their capability in the dream state, it is important to resist the urge to indulge. Instead of engaging in personal pursuits, the dreamer must keep still and just “feel” the dream.

2.)    Try to be “conscious” – the dreamer must then try to “wake up,” but not in the sense of willing one’s self to escape the dream state. Instead, the dreamer will try to awaken their mind in the sense that they will be more mindful and aware of the dream state, trying to fully recognize and feel everything, instead of just simply experiencing the dream state like a blur or a flurry of images and sensations.

3.)    Meditate, contemplate, reflect – instead of indulging, the dreamer then contemplates various aspects of their lives. This is where the lessons of lucid dreaming come into play. For example, if the dreamer is afraid of something, perhaps a situation in their lives, they can conjure up the scenario in the dream, and instead of simply trying to run away from it, or conquer it, the dreamer tries to understand it, all the while trying to be as aware and “awake” as possible.

Once the dream yoga session is over, whatever lessons and feelings and insights gained within are then brought to the real world, to fully awaken from it.

5 Common Nightmares And Their Meanings

Nightmares are terrifying experiences that can lead to everything from slight trauma to outright fear of sleeping. But nightmares aren’t just horrible dreams that only serve to scare us bring dread. Nightmares can also be useful tools to analyze what our subconscious is telling us we need in our lives, like what we need to work on to improve, what we need to finish or finalize to move forward, and so on.

Here are some of the most common nightmares and what they mean.

  1. Dying – one of the most terrifying nightmares, which often jerks a dreamer awake. Oftentimes vivid dreams of death can sear themselves in the psyche of the dreamer, and give a glimpse at what true death will feel, just at that last moment before the life is truly cut.  But death is not necessarily a bad sign. Because nightmares involving death can represent rebirth, or the coming of a new chapter of your life. As well, nightmares that involve graves or tombs may represent a part of yourself that has been lost, or stopped, that you may need to revitalize in order to make your life more meaningful. This may be a passion that has been stopped due to work, or a long lost connection with a friend that you may need to revive.
  2. Being trapped, caged, or stuck – especially terrifying for those who have claustrophobia, nightmares that involve being bound and captured, caged like an animal, or being trapped and stuck in things like quicksand or vines, can make the dreamer feel helpless and not in control. This is a reflection of a real-life situation of being stuck, whether it be in the career, a relationship, or in an existing situation where you feel like the dreamer has no power or influence. When recurring dreams like this happen, it may be time to reassess your relationships, career, or current situation in life.

  3. Getting lost – nightmares that start of as a nice dream of journey and exploration and end up being lost and confused, and feeling the fears associated with them, are often a sign of anxiety, confusion, frustration, and a feeling of rejection. These may be caused by perhaps a new venture or job, failing at making relationships or friends, or any situation where the dreamer is starting anew somewhere.
  4. Losing teeth – this nightmare is mostly if not always an unsettling experience. It is often accompanied by feelings of dread and fear and loss of confidence and capability. The teeth are symbolic of our ability to live (using teeth to eat our food) and be beautiful (our smile), and when teeth fall out it means the dreamer feels like losing both. When the dreamer tries to gather the falling teeth and return it in the mouth, it is symbolic of exerting effort to repair what they feel they are starting to lose in order to regain confidence and the ability to live or survive.

  5. Being chased – nightmares that involve being chased is symbolic of the dreamer escaping or running away from things that need attention, often represented by the things chasing the dreamer. It can be anything from a mob of people, to wild animals, and even aliens and ghosts and monsters. It is said that sometimes the dreamer will have a good idea what needs to be addressed as soon as they wake up even if they didn’t know prior what the chasers are representing.

If you experience any of these five common nightmares, let the fear pass, and analyze your life after. It may lead to drastic, positive changes for your future! But the best way to stop nightmares from happening is to lucid dream. To help guide you in the lucid dream experience, listen to our most popular binaural beats track for lucid dreaming here.

Using a complex pattern of binaural beat and isochronic tone frequencies dedicated to help you achieve good sleep and have lucid dreams, this 8-hour music track is divided into four unique sections. In the first 2 hours we've used frequencies that range from 3-13Hz (Alpha-Theta range) to help calm your mind and feel deeply relaxed. There is a pleasurable feeling of floating and it will give effects such as stress reduction, relaxed awareness, release of serotonin, and an induction to sleep spindles as your mind and body allows itself into sleep. It also contains triggers for creativity and imagery and access to subconscious images as you doze off.

The second and third sections contain more of the Theta waves, which are also present in dreaming, sleep, deep meditation and creative inspiration. As you have already fallen asleep, the binaural beats tap into your subconsciousness as your mind prepares itself into a lucid dream state. The music is more steady so as not to interrupt your sleep.

The fourth and last section returns itself to the Alpha range with a mix of Theta and Delta. This is where deep sleep occurs and more often than not, the dream state. There is a decreased awareness of the physical world. This section also contains the Earth Resonance or Schumann Resonance, which will leave you feeling revitalized upon waking up.

How To Be Part Of Your Favorite Movies, TV Shows, And Books With Lucid Dreaming

Many of us are fans of certain film, book, and TV series, because of the worlds that they have and the characters that inhabit them. Whether it’s sci-fi, fantasy, or romance, or a bit of both, these fictional worlds are a draw to many people, but oftentimes they are only experienced on the media they are presented at: on the movie screen, on TV, or on paper. But what if there was a way to be part of these worlds, and experience what the characters do? Or even better, be a character in it as well? Well, you can, with lucid dreaming!

What is lucid dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is a dreamstate in which you are aware that you are dreaming, and as such have the ability to dictate what you will be doing and what you will be experiencing in the dream. Pretty much you are in control! And while some people use lucid dreaming to time travel, or even have lucid dream sex with people they are attracted to, fans of fictional worlds can opt to use lucid dream to be part of their favorite universes and experience them fully.

Some people do so as a character in the story, experiencing what other characters do. Others change the story to suit their desires (this is especially important for Game of Thrones lucid dreamers who have had their hearts broken way too many times due to slain characters) and others simply spectate and watch the story unfold from up close.

Regardless of how they want to use lucid dreaming, lucid dreamers who want to experience their movies, shows, and books, will be able to do so with enough practice.

Using soundscapes of different atmospheric textures to help create your ideal space setting, this album also uses frequencies from the Theta Range that promotes fantasy, imagery, creativity, access to the subconsciousness, and also frequencies from the Alpha Range that promote relaxation, dream enhancers and sleep aids.

Basic steps
Setting up this kind of lucid dream experience starts long before sleeping time. In fact, the more you reinforce your mindset, the higher the chances of getting the lucid dream you want. The steps below assume that you are already somehow experienced with lucid dreaming, but if you aren’t yet, read this basic guide to learn how to lucid dream.

1.)    Set your lucid dream intention early – To instill the idea of lucid dreaming your favorite fictional fantasy world, it is very advisable to start early in the day. This can be done a number of different ways, from simply constantly reminding yourself that “tonight, I will dream about…” to something more powerful like actually watching the movie or show or reading the book with a lot of focus. The options that will be available will vary depending on whether or not you have a busy day, so pick the right one for you. The most important thing is that the fictional world you want to experience is in your head already. Learn more about setting your lucid dream intentions in our previous discussion here.
2.)    Set your room up properly - No use having the lucid dream intention done for the day if your room will be a distraction in itself and pull you out of sleeping. Set your room up properly to induce lucid dreaming faster and better. Our basic guide on how to do this can be found here, but basically the idea is to drown out possible distractions (noise, lights, nosy roommates/neighbors) and to set the mood and environment (proper lighting, music, other sensory stimuli.) This will relax your mind and body better to have a lucid dream experience.
3.)    Perform your reality checks properly – Once you’re sleeping and dreaming, it is important to perform your reality checks ASAP. These are what will trigger the lucid dream. There are many ways to do reality checks, some of which can be found here in our guide. The faster you do a reality check, the sooner you can experience the dream the way you want to!
4.)    Relish the experience, confront the negatives – Once you’re dreaming, enjoy it! Do what you set out to do and do it well. But just like in any story, sometimes bad things happen, and a lucid dream can have nightmarish elements. Rather than scare you, do what your fictional heroes do: confront it! This can be part of the story as well.
5.)    Record your dream after – Just like a movie, tv, or book series, it’s impossible to finish everything in just one lucid dream experience. To be able to easily get back to your favorite fictional worlds, record your dreams in a lucid dream journal. This will not only help you remember and relive your dream experience during the day, you can also use it as part of your lucid dream intention as indicated in step 1!

There’s one more thing you can do to enhance the lucid dream experience -  use a binaural beats track for lucid dreaming to help induce the images you wish to see, like this one:

Using a complex series of binaural beat and isochronic tone frequencies, we have divided this music track into four parts. The first part will bring you into a state of deep relaxation, creative inspiration for imagery that you will use for your dreams, and introductory frequencies to help trigger lucid dreams. The second part starts in the Theta range and drops slowly down to the Delta, where deep sleep and lucid dream frequencies can be found. Here, you will have decreased awareness of the physical world and can give an awake awareness to your subconsciousness. The third and fourth parts will continue to flow up and down these Theta and Delta ranges, but focusing more on enhanced inner awareness and easy access to inner resources that will help create the dreamscape. In a spiritual level, these will help you seek inner peace and self-renewal.
