Everyday Activities That Produce Different Brainwaves To Improve The Mind And Body

The brainwaves produced by our brain can benefit us greatly in many different ways, as we have previously discussed in numerous blogposts before. But did you know that normal, everyday activities can also produce these beneficial brainwaves? There are many different activities that produce different brainwaves, and knowing what they are and how to perform them can benefit your mind and body greatly!

Gamma Waves – the highest frequency brainwaves, Gamma Waves that improve creativity, speech, and learning, and overall perception. Below are sample activities that can produce these waves.

1.)    Learning or speaking in a different language - conversing in a different language with people who know the language more than you can produce gamma waves. In addition, the process of learning a new language can also produce gamma waves.
2.)    Conceptualizing ideas – whether it’s for work or school, or simply imagining ideas, the process itself can produce gamma waves.
3.)    Recalling memories or looking at photo albums – taking a trip down memory lane can also produce gamma waves, and in turn actually increase memory recall (both the quality of the recall and the speed)
4.)    Meditation – deep meditation also produces gamma waves.
5.)    Active perception – the process of being very aware of your surroundings and self also produces gamma waves.

Beta Waves – the normal brainwave pattern produced during a normal day, whose domains include proper mental functioning, emotional control, mental capacity, alertness, and concentration.

1.)    Learning a new skill, repetition – focusing on learning a new skill, whether physical or mental, can produce beta waves which in turn will improve the ability to learn new skills. It is important to practice these skills repeatedly.
2.)    Playing mental games – playing chess, checkers, scrabble, or any other mental game that requires tremendous focus as well as problem solving can produce beta waves.
3.)    Read a book (mentally, or out loud) – the act of reading requires focus as well as understanding and learning. Any book that you are not previously aware of is the best, although reading a book you’ve read before is also an option.
4.)    Studying – the act of studying itself produces beta waves. It can be anything from studying an academic lesson or topic to studying human behavior as observed in public. Any form of studying requires focus and concentration and can produce beta waves.
5.)    Meditation – meditation variants that require a lot of focus on a particular object or activity can produce beta waves.

Alpha Waves – the brainwave pattern that is associated with relaxation while awake, feeling peace of mind and overall calm, alpha waves also govern abstract creativity (one that is not connected to logic) and is often the reason why people can think out of the box. This is also the wave that is most dominant when lucid dreaming, and the brainwave most associated with stress and anxiety reduction.

1.)    Close your eyes – the very simple act of closing your eyes produces Alpha Waves. This is why people who are trying to find solutions to problems or situations often find themselves closing their eyes when they are engaged in deep thought. How many times have you found an answer to a situation by simply closing your eyes and thinking? Right?
2.)    Engaging in artful pursuits – painting, sculpting, drawing, or any other form of arts and crafts that require free thought (no need to focus too much, just create) can produce alpha waves, especially when the mind is encouraged to run wild.
3.)    Performing a skill you’re good at – skills or activities that you have a high skill level in performing also produces alpha waves. In fact, when performing this skill is done at the best of ways, it is because the mind has produced a surge of alpha waves.
4.)    Be in a relaxing situation – whether it’s a massage, playing with puppies, or just sleeping after a long day.
5.)    Meditation – relaxing meditation varieties can produce alpha waves.

Theta Waves – can be considered the “super wave”, this brainwave pattern influences many different domains of the mind, from memory to emotions to creativity to relaxation and more. Producing theta waves then causes overall improvement for the persion.

1.)    Zen meditation – one of the most effective ways of producing theta waves, zen meditation requires a number of different things done in conjunction with one another; freeing the mind of logic or emptying it entirely (often associated with alpha waves), focusing on breath and posture (beta waves), and relaxing to an almost sleep state (alpha and gamma waves.) This is why zen meditation has a lot of benefits.
2.)    Playing recall and recognition games – charades, puzzles, and boggle/scrabble are good games to produce theta waves.
3.)    Engage in relaxing, creative pursuits that require effort – painting by numbers, Sudoku, and playing action and strategy video games are all good activities to produce the super wave.

Choosing to do these activities can definitely enhance your brainwave production and in turn improve your mind and body. But don’t forget that these activities are enhanced even further by listening to binaural beats tracks. Dream Fitness: How To Use Lucid Dreams For Weight Loss

Lucid dreaming is a powerful tool for the mind. It allows the dreamer to take control of what they dream about, and have amazing experiences as they sleep. But as we discussed before, lucid dreaming is so much more than that. Such a power can be used for many different things, and one of them is something that many people are struggling with these days: fitness and weight loss. Sounds unbelievable that lucid dreaming can help you lose weight and get fit? Let’s explore the idea further.

First thing’s first – the dreaming process itself is not the only component of this method. While lucid dreaming an intense dream (such as a triathlon) causes the heart and respiratory system to react, and therefore burn some calories, it won’t be as much as actually doing a triathlon in the waking world. So if that’s the case, “what’s the point?” you might ask? The point is, it’s all about conditioning.

Diet through dreaming

There is a saying: you can’t out exercise a bad diet. And most of the time, a bad diet is because of intense cravings that people have for certain kinds of foods or dishes, whether their body actually needs it or not. There are many causes of mental cravings for food, from stress due to work or school, to a coping mechanism for sadness or loss, or just simple desire for something delicious. We’ll explore this more in a future discussion. But either way, the effects are the same: when we eat excessively beyond what our body needs, it stores it as fat, and we pack on the pounds.

Lucid dreaming can help in this by allowing our mind, a big component in the food craving, to be satisfied, without having to affect the body. How? By lucid dreaming about eating!

Many studies have shown that dreamers have felt lesser and lesser food cravings while they are awake by lucid dreaming about eating the dishes they desire, often in excessive numbers. There are a number of ways this is done.
  1. Eating until satisfied – The dreamer dreams about the foods they want to feast on, and enjoys it in a manner that will satisfy their mental food craving. Once this is reached, they stop.
  2. Eating until sick – The dreamer dreams about the foods they want, and eats excessively, until they are either sick of the taste, or simply too full to continue.
  3. Eating with consequence – The dreamer eats what they desire, but then also dreams about the consequences of such action, like suddenly seeing their legs and bellies grow, or feel difficulty in walking or moving.
Either way, once the dreamer is up and awake, the association carries over in real life, whether it’s through simply satisfied food cravings, or actually being sick and scared of overeating. And this helps in curbing waking world gluttony.

Exercise through dreaming

Exercising, or the prospect thereof, can really turn some people off from fitness. Whether it is because the movements are hard and need getting used to, or that exercise just takes up too much time, this is yet another obstacle in getting fit. But lucid dreaming can help in that too, same as the diet.

A lucid dreamer who wants to exercise can start, or continue, their journey in the dream. For example, the dreamer started doing running as a fitness routine. If in real life they can only manage a mile or two, whether due to low energy, unpracticed movements, or boring scenery, in the dream they can go indefinitely and run in a landscape that is just breathtaking. But the benefit goes beyond that. In the dream, the dreamer can practice their running stride, practice proper breathing, and most importantly, condition their mind to actually enjoy the run instead of think of it as a laborious endeavor. When they wake up, the feeling carries over!

This can be applied for any exercise routine or method that is causing fear or anxiety to the dreamer. Fear lifting heavy weights? Lucid dream about how easy it can be. Don’t like the idea of doing martial arts? Lucid dream about being trained by Bruce Lee! Once the mind is conditioned to not just tolerate, but actually enjoy exercising, the effects will ripple out in the waking world. And remember: the exercise in the dream also causes the body to react, so it also burns calories on its own!

Whether dieting or exercising via lucid dreaming, the effects can be enhanced even further by listening to a binaural beats track for exercise and getting fit, like this one:

Mind Over Matter: How To Use Meditation For Addiction And Cravings

There are many pleasures available to us in life, from food, to sex, to alcohol, to sporting and leisurely activities. And while having regular doses of these things is a good thing, as it keeps us happy, sometimes the frequency of these desires becomes beyond what is normal, to the point of desiring them without really thinking of the possible consequences. This is when simple desires become an addiction, and addictive cravings can be very hard to resist, especially when both the mind and body are hooked. There are many ways to deal with addiction and cravings, but one such way you can do on a regular basis is “mindful meditation.”

Why are cravings strong?

Depending on what is being craved for, a craving is strong because it comes from the subconscious, after consciously satisfying the body and mind with a certain thing or activity. And when something is desired by the subconscious, it can be very hard to break free from it.

One of the big reasons why cravings are so hard to break off of is the association between the craving, and the reward. Many of us experience rewards on a daily basis, but addicts and cravers desire the rewards beyond simply just liking them. And that's what makes a craving and addiction so powerful, because many times the rewards are thought to be unreachable through any other means.

What is mindfulness?

Put it simply, mindfulness is exerting effort to focus one's attention towards something specific. Thoughts that may end up distracting the person are deliberately nudged away to be able to focus. This is usually associated with time, focusing one's attention on the present moment, but can be used for everything else.

When mindfulness is used as meditation, that is, contemplating in a peaceful yet controlled manner, the addiction and craving, it can be a very powerful tool. It is composed of three key elements: remembering, being aware, and putting attention to it. The person needs to be aware of the craving they wish to take control of, put all their attention to it, and remember why they want to take control of it, keeping it in its place.

What mindfulness does in terms of cravings and addiction is they become better in living in the present, not worrying about the future rewards when they satisfy their addiction and not feeling bad about the past givings-in to their cravings. This helps them get rid of the wrong pleasant emotions they feel when they give in to the cravings, and the unpleasant emotions of guilt afterwards.

More importantly, mindfulness meditation increases the person's ability to be more aware of the cravings they are trying to get rid of, or avoid, or reduce. This goes hand in hand with their self-awareness, which has an overall benefit for the person, as they are able to be more accepting of themselves, which leads to less stress and anxiety, and give them more control of their emotions, which in turn strengthens their resolve against their cravings.

It is the exact opposite of what a vicious cycle is!

How to perform mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation is done almost like any other meditation method, which we outlined in a previous blog post here. But in general, it involves the following basic steps:
- Sitting comfortably with good posture, depending on the kind of meditation selected.
- Controlled, deep breathing to relax the mind and body
- Focusing on the breath and nothing else (at least in the beginning.) Anything related to the breathing (how it fills the lungs with air, how the air rushes in the nostrils, for example) can be used as focal points.
- When the mind begins to wander, or more importantly, think about the craving, this is when extra steps are to be taken. Depending on your level of mindfulness or control, this can be any of the following:
      1. ) gently nudging your mind away from thinking about the craving and focusing on the breathing.
      2. ) focusing on the triggers of the craving. Why did you think and feel about the craving despite meditating and focusing on the breathing?
      3. ) recognizing the emotions that arise from feeling the craving. Did you feel excited at the prospect of giving in? Do you feel angry or frustrated that you're meditating instead of indulging?
      4. ) taking control and telling yourself that you are not your craving and your addiction, and that you dictate whether or not it makes you happy.

Ultimately, mindfulness meditation is really about what the name implies: being more mindful. It is about focusing and recognizing the craving, and dealing with it. Try it for anything that you feel is starting to take control of your life, rather than the other way around, and it can do wonders! To help you, you can listen to a binaural beats track for focus so you can laser pinpoint your craving and take control of it. Like this track here:
