The Essential Keys To Happiness

Many people pretty much have it all: money, possessions, friends, and yet find it challenging to live a truly happy life. And then there are people who barely skate by: live from paycheck to paycheck, only have pets and the barest of essentials, a small circle of allies, and yet are some of the happiest people on Earth. How is this possible? How can something so counterintuitive, based on societal norms, be possible? It’s simple: being happy depends on so much more.

The Keys To Happiness

The thing about happiness is that it’s both simple to achieve, and yet not, because some of the keys run contrary to what we may know and have been raised to believe. But when done right, in the right doses, based on what one is capable of doing, these keys to happiness will truly increase your happiness levels to new heights.

The keys to happiness are divided into two parts: the keys for the outward, and the keys for the inward.

The Outward Keys
These are the things that involve our daily activities, things we do to our physical self, do outside to other people, to the world, our expression of self to everyone and everything else.

1.)    Give and Relate – when you care about others and give and extend help, gifts, or assistance. In addition to this, building relationships by relating to others, engaging in their joys, supporting them through their sorrows, and strengthening bonds through love and care, it makes us happy. Both of these keys also increase and widen our own social networks (no, I’m not talking about social media ones!) and give a sense of belonging that many people may find difficulty searching.

Suggested ways – volunteer in shelters and soup kitchens, budget a reasonable amount for regular gift giving, reconnect with old friends.

2.)    Be Active and Try Things – exercising and getting fit not only have physical benefits, they also have emotional and mental benefits as well. Getting an endorphin and adrenaline high can not only improve the mood at that moment, but also strengthen the body which in turn will also improve mental well-being. And you don’t need to be a triathlete or a gymrat to do this. Just be active in your own realistic ways! And once you’re active, try out new things. Learning skills and achieving milestones also brings us happiness and a sense of discovery, and in some cases, it is the key to discovering one’s true passions that can lead to an even happier life.

Suggested ways – get a gym membership, go on regular walks with the dog, attend workshops, go back to school, go on hikes, enjoy nature.

3.)    Increase Awareness and Appreciation – there is more to life than what your eyes glance at as time whizzes by. The proverbial “stop and smell the roses” saying applies here! Increase your awareness through meditation, slow down your day to appreciate the many different things that are present in our world. When was the last time you paused and simply listened to birds chirping over breakfast? The last time you walked to work and smelled the different aromas of the city? Things like this. And once you appreciate what you have, what you experience everyday, it can make you a lot happier.

Suggested ways – walk to work sometimes, go to a park and read a book, find hidden places, engage in your hobby.

The Inward Keys

These are the things we do inward towards us, our mind and soul.

1.)    Accept Yourself, Find Meaning – we have to accept the fact that all of us are made, raised, and live differently, with even the slightest of nuances that differ us from the rest, despite what societal norms try to dictate. We should not compare who we are on the inside with what we see from other people outside. Accept who you truly are, what your heart really tells you, and it is the very powerful thing. And it is in accepting who we really are can we start to find meaning in our lives, what we are meant to do and give back to this world.

Suggested ways – meditate regularly, find like-minded peers and engage them, take time off and go on vacation, unleash your spirit to the universe.

2.)    Be In Touch With Ups And Downs – our lives will be an emotional rollercoaster ride. It won’t always be good, and it won’t always be bad, unless we choose to do nothing about it. Having the right attitude in experiencing the ups and downs, being grateful and sharing the positive emotions, and being strong and reaching out when needed during the negative emotions, trains our mind and soul to be stronger, bounce back better, and be happier in the long run.

Suggested ways – reflect, meditate, recall past experiences

3.)    Plan Your Path – having a compass for your life goal can be a daunting task, but once written down, or planned ahead, you will find that when you achieve milestones that adhere to this compass, each one will bring you happiness and joy. So have that plan ahead!
One more thing is to regularly enjoy life’s small joys, like listening to good music. This binaural beats track for happiness can help give you a nice full dose of happiness every day!

Transcending Barriers: Explaining The Religious Ties And Answering The Supposed Dangers Of Meditation

As a form of relieving stress, improving productivity, and gaining deeper personal understanding, meditation has been gaining popularity in recent years, now being used by everyone from Yoga practitioners to CEOs of major corporations. But despite its rise in the popular culture, many people still misunderstand, and sometimes even fear and dislike, the idea of meditation. This is due to lack of information or even misinformation spread about the practice. Today, we’ll discuss what meditation really is about and why it transcends the barriers of religion, race, culture, and lifestyle.

What exactly is meditation?

As we previously discussed, meditation is a state of mind wherein it is emptied of whatever may trouble or disturb you, to pause and be at peace with oneself and be calm. By this definition, something as simple as sitting down and relaxing in silence, to something more complex like doing calligraphy, can be considered “meditation.” But the most common practice is that of finding a space where one can be quiet and undisturbed, and simply relaxing and being at peace.
Now, this is where the definition ends (in a simple manner) and the speculation and misinformation begin.

Meditation and religion

Meditation is not a religious practice, and does not denote that you are following a specific religion. However, different religions actually have their own ways of meditation, whether it is acknowledged as such or not.

For example, in the Hindu mantra meditation is very similar to the Christian rosary prayer, with both constantly repeating a specific verse and prayer in a solemn manner.
Judaism’s Qabalah, which is Hebrew for “to receive and reveal” follows a tradition that requires the students to transform their inner selves with the external, assimilating symbols’ characteristics via meditation.

Islamic tradition requires a Muslim to pray at least 5 times a day, during which time they focus and meditate on God by reciting the Qur’an, strengthening the ties between God and man.

And then there’s Buddhism, where Buddha himself, Siddhartha Gautama, is known to have reached enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi tree. Different variants of Buddhism, such as Zen Buddhism, emphasize the importance of “emptying the mind” in their practice of Zazen, or Zen meditation, wherein the person stays in a seated position similar to Siddhartha, to allow the unconscious mind to be one with the universe.

There are many other religions and variants thereof, with their own versions of traditional meditation, even though it is not formally called as such. But the basic principle is that if it is a solemn practice, that requires some form of spiritual connection, involves either introspection or extrospection, and aims to bring mental peace and calm, it can be classified as a form of meditation.

Meditation is dangerous? Makes you prone to evil influence?

There are some groups of people who fear that the spiritual connections done during meditations make cause the meditating person to be prone to evil influences, whether it be demonic possession, or becoming a portal for evil spirits, or simply tapping into dark desires that lay dormant within. Others fear awakening supernatural powers, like being psychic or opening the third eye. And then there’s the fear of awakening the kundalini, also known as the “serpent spirit” and the root chakra.

We will discuss these dangers in a future post, but right now, all you need to know is this: these are all merely hurdles, distractions, and possible fears for your meditation session. As with all kinds of meditation, focus is key, and to lose focus due to these distractions and fears is to hinder your meditation progress.

Also, remember that meditation induces certain brainwave patterns, and each one has side-effects if there is an imbalance in the amount produced.  Included in these side-effects are seeing visions and hallucinations, experiencing feelings of dread and fear, as well as a gripping sense of anxiety. All of which may be attributed to the supposed dangers of meditation that are being spread by those who have had meditation experiences that have gone astray.

As with all things, focus and understanding are keys to achieving a fruitful meditation experience. Binaural beats can help with this as it regulates and induces the right amounts of brainwaves to enhance the meditation experience. Try it out with this binaural beats track for spiritual meditation, which will quiet the mind and reduce if not entirely eliminate the risks of meditation.

Benefits of Binaural Beats for Anxiety Treatment

Many things in our lives are uncertain. For many, dealing with this uncertainty is normal, and doesn’t really affect that much. However, there are those whose feelings about uncertainty get amplified: At best, it is moderate worry and unease, at worst it can be crippling fear and panic. These are the characteristics of anxiety disorders, it is a serious issue that many people face today. This is where binaural beats can be of help.

What exactly is anxiety, and anxiety disorders?

Simply defined, anxiety is a human emotion that people experience when faced with situations and moments of uncertainty, like a very difficult life decision, a critical problem at work, a difficult exam in school, or deciding on the course of a relationship. These are just a few examples, but there are other, smaller ones that may also trigger anxiety. As mentioned above, most people who deal with this can do so normally, but those with anxiety disorders may find feel so much anxiety that it disrupts their capability to have and live a normal life. So the main goal of any treatment to be employed is to lower the anxiety levels to normal, thus returning normal mental function and the ability to go on with their day-to-day lives.

Examples of anxiety disorders

  1. Panic disorder – very unpredictable, panic disorders can strike without warning, and may include physical symptoms like chest pains and palpitations, accompanied by difficulty in breathing and sweating.
  2. General anxiety disorder – similar to panic disorder, and may sometimes lead to it. It entails exaggerated worry about even the smallest things.
  3. Social anxiety disorder -  an introspective anxiety disorder, this involves being hyper self-conscious about being judged, mocked, criticized, and ridiculed by others, which affects their responses to social situations or everyday actions.
  4. Phobias – certain fears that involve specific objects or situations, usually at a disproportionate level causing impractical reactions.

These are just general examples of anxiety disorders. Generally, these will cause everything from the mental (sleeping problems, excessive sweating, being unable to be calm and at peace) to the physical (palpitations and breathing issues, nausea, headaches, muscle tension, numbness, or tingling) in varying degrees, along with the feelings of panic and dread. So you can imagine how a disorder affects the victim so much that normal situations become much more complicated and difficult for them to deal with.

Binaural beats as a treatment

As previously discussed, on the benefits of binaural beats is the ability make the listener feel relaxed, calm, and have peace of mind. This is done by affecting the specific brainwaves whose domains involve relaxation, in addition to the audio therapy brought about by the tones themselves. Alpha waves (at 8-13hz) in particular, whose spheres of influence include body and mind relaxation, and Delta waves (0-4hz) whose domains are that of sleep, healing, and involuntary bodily functions, are examples of brainwaves that are stoked by binaural beats to achieve relaxing effects. A good balance of all the brainwaves (Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma, Theta, and so on) is the key to achieving the desired effect when using binaural beats as a tool to aid in dealing with anxiety.

There have been many scientific studies and research groups conducted to seek the validity of the use of binaural beats as anxiety and depression treatments, and virtually of them succeeded in showing results in varying degrees.

For instance, a study done by Peniston and Kulkosky in 1989 showed positive results in dealing with anxiety from alcoholics, showing only a 20% relapse rate for an experimental group who were regularly exposed to 20 minute sessions of Alpha and Theta binaural beats, versus an 80% relapse rate for a control group who were sent to a regular 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous program.

Another study from the Alternative Therapy Health & Medicine in 2001 used binaural beats to treat people with mild anxiety, five times a week over a whole month. Patients who received the treatment showed a significant reduction in their anxiety, and have been able to perform normal everyday functions at an increased capacity.

Many more studies have been conducted; these are just a couple as examples.

How to use binaural beats for anxiety treatment

Using binaural beats for anxiety treatment, at home, is quite easy, as we previously discussed here. But some conditions, when met, can make the experience much better. Specifically…

  1. Prepare a relaxing area for the listener – a room with little noise, a comfortable chair or bed, and even aromatic candles or incense can be very conducive to relaxation and anxiety reduction.
  2. Use the proper audio equipment – some binaural beats tracks don’t require headphones, but most do, as this is how binaural beats work, by directing two different tones, one in each ear. So make sure you have the right audio equipment depending on the track you’ll use.
  3. Have the right binaural beats track – certain tracks will have specific functions. Make sure to get tracks that specifically deal with anxiety and depression. And make sure that these tracks are of a good bitrate quality: a lower bitrate has lower yield and effects.
  4. Do it consistently – binaural beats therapy, like any other form of therapy, is not a one-hit magic pill. While the effects of tracks can be potent, it has to be done consistently, like how it was done in the scientific studies mentioned above. Devote the time for the treatment, and the benefits will come in spades!

Here’s an example of a binaural beats track for anxiety and depression, which you can use for yourself or for a friend who needs it.

Dreaming With Delta: What Are Delta Waves And What Are Its Benefits?

Brainwave therapy is the main purpose of binaural beats and brainwave entertainment, using specific brainwaves to induce benefits and promote feelings of wellness and mental health. We have previously talked about brainwaves, specifically, what Alpha Waves and Beta Waves are and what are their benefits. Next up, let’s talk about Delta Waves!

What are Delta Waves?

Discovered in the early 1900s by a man named W. Grey Walter, Delta Waves are associated with the very deepest levels of sleep, relaxation, and peace of mind.

Operating at a frequency range of 0-4Hz (the slowest of all the brainwaves), Delta Waves are what cause sleep to be restorative, which allow the person to wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. It is also important for the healing process –through the release of various hormones during sleep-, and is what controls many of the body’s unconscious functions, like the heartbeat, digestion, breathing, and many other things we don’t often think about, but actually need.  As such, it is also associated with loss of consciousness and physical awareness.

Benefits of Delta Waves

  1. Deep sleep and healing – the main benefit of Delta Waves is allowing the person to get a good night’s sleep, which allows the body to heal itself and rest and revitalize the mind. Without it, a person will wake up feeling lethargic and weak instead of recharged. In some cases, Delta Waves even help slow down the aging process, through the production of hormones like DHEA and melatonin, which affects the skin, bodily functions, and overall well-being. It also helps produce natural human growth hormone by the pituitary gland, which also helps restore the body (and for athletes and people who love to workout, reap the benefits of the day’s efforts), as well as improve the immune system to further protect the body from sickness and illness.
  2. Regular bodily functions – Delta Waves control all of the body’s activities that we are not conscious of. Proper heartbeat, proper kidney functioning, proper liver functioning, proper breathing, proper digestion, etc. Having a good dose of Delta Waves makes sure that everything is in-sync and of good working order. And this is important. Because while we can stop ourselves from tripping over something and avoiding injury, we have no control of how kidneys go and function. So we are relying on our body to simply function well.
  3. Increase in empathy and intuition – a good production of Delta Waves allows the person to care more and empathize more with people, generally leading to being more receptive to their problems and being more willing and fulfilled to help them. It also helps to further accept and understand other people’s emotions, relate to their problems, and think of ways to help. Included in this is an increase in one’s intuition, which in scientific terms is the body’s natural response to certain events or activities. Intuition allows the person to tap into the body’s natural capabilities and the mind’s expectations, thus allowing for better decision making when it comes to “trusting your gut.”

Those are the main benefits of Delta Waves. But like with anything, too much can be a disadvantage as well. Having too much Delta Waves can cause people to lose focus; remember, Delta Waves are associated with relaxation and sleep, so having too much may cause the person to have difficulty retaining information or focusing on the task at hand. This is commonly associated with various learning disabilities and even ADHD in people and kids.
So the solution here is to produce just enough Delta Waves!

How To Get Good Delta Waves

One natural way to regulate your Delta Waves (that is, get a good amount, not too much, not too little) is through meditation. Specifically, deep meditation. While this can be quite a task to do, it is a very good method. We will be discussing different meditation techniques in a separate blog post.

Another is through listening to binaural beats. We have already discussed how binaural beats work, and there are binaural beats tracks for deep sleep using delta waves that you can listen to, like this one!

Health Benefits of Music Therapy

Music therapy is a form of treatment that uses music to give care to patients. Clinical studies can guarantee for the health benefits of a medically approved music therapy treatment. Music therapy improves people in a physical, mental, emotional and social way. Therapists use music therapy in different ways, which includes having people sing along to the music, meditate and relax while music plays and carry out various exercises and movements with music as a channel. When played and combined with a person's thoughts, music therapy can help to get better everything from a patient's speech to their memory and physical balance. It also provides emotional healing, helping people to develop positivity and lessen stress and pain. Music also helps people take their mind off of physical pain, which can help them manage with a number of illnesses.

Unexpectedly, music influences the body and mind in many different but powerful ways.

The following are some of benefits of music, which help to explain the effectiveness of music therapy:

Depression. Playing or listening to music may increase the effects of some conventional treatment. Music is known to influence individual’s mood but can it relieve and cure depression? In recent studies, music therapy may work to ease depression in several ways. Like playing an instrument, it allows depressed people to express themselves emotionally when they can't directly talk about how they feel. Listening to calming music helps others relax and it’s their way to comfort themselves from self-destruction and so they are better able to let go of feelings that are troubling. Other people may find that sharing a musical experience with a therapist helps them feel more comfortable discussing their problems and feelings. The objective is for the patient to share thoughts and feelings that occur with the music making and resulting to develop solutions into his or her problems.

Autism. Music therapy supports the positive effects in the treatment of individuals with autism. A person with autism shows equal or higher abilities in pitch processing, labelling of emotions in music, and musical preference when compared to normally developing peers. The most persuasive evidence supporting the clinical benefits of music therapy lies in the areas of social-emotional awareness and communication that includes the increase of compliance, reduces anxiety, increases speech output, receptive labelling, and increases interaction with peers. Research results also support the potential for music to assist in the learning of daily routines of those people with autism.

Stress. Listening to music can have an extremely relaxing effect on both our mind and body, especially listening mellow and classical music. This type of music can be advantageous on our physiological functions, slows down the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the levels of stress hormones. Music may even be able to help you concentrate and can be an effective treatment for people dealing with mental health conditions. When you are stress, there is a tendency to keep away from listening to music. Possibly, it feels like a waste of time but as we all know, productivity boosts when stress is reduced, so this is another way where you can gain enormous rewards. It takes a small effort to begin with.

Cancer. Music therapy is being practiced by health professionals. It may be used to encourage emotional expression, promote social interaction, relieve symptoms, and other treatment goals. Music therapists may use active or passive technique with patients, depending on their patient’s needs and abilities. Research found that music therapy can lower heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Music therapists work with a variety of physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms. There are no claims music therapy can cure cancer or other diseases but it is often used in cancer treatment to help reduce pain, anxiety, and depression, as well as nausea caused by chemotherapy. Some people believe music therapy may be a beneficial addition to the health care of children with cancer by promoting social interaction and support. Medical experts believe it can reduce some symptoms, aid healing, improve physical movement, and improve a patient’s quality of life.
